Obstruction Pass

We had a great trip!  September 5-7, 2014.  Rode the Flood from Washington park, to Strawberry Island for lunch.  Crossed over to Peavine pass, and had ice cream at the Blakely island store.  Then on to the WWTA camp at Obstruction pass.  Saturday we paddled up to Clark Island passing thru some challenging tidal rips, and returned to O. pass on nearly flat water, visiting Doe island.  Sunday the ebb didn't give us the boost we expected, but we paddled down the east side of Blakely island to James island, where we waited out the flood, Then crossed back to Washington park.  We enjoyed fine September weather, nearly full moon, light winds.    We visited 4 WWTA sites and all were in good condition, and mostly vacant on this weekend after Labor day.  Lead by Karl Guntheroth, with Katie Level, Kathleen Grimly, and Mike Beeler.  We saw many of the usual wildlife plus porpoises, river otters, seals, phalaropes, herman's gull, sea lemon (chiton), urchins and sea cucumbers.  Most of this route is undeveloped, and there were many good beaches for breaks.  This is a good trip, but requires good planning and favorable conditions to make challenging open water crossings safe.

Five paddlers were met with rain and calm winds for an adventure leaving Washington Park in Anacortes with a plan to take a clockwise route around Burrows and Allen islands.  After a brief safety discussion including an anonymous risk assessment, we headed out promptly at 9 a.m. Departing on the first hour of a flood tide with a moderate exchange, we encountered a small current as we headed east through Burrows Pass. As we crossed the channel, we met no other boat traffic. Coming around the NE corner of Burrows is where you will encounter the most current as water converges into the small channel. This can be a challenging area with a strong current.  We made a brief stop to checkout the campground on the east side of the island then continued on to Allen Island. Spada Lake Adventure

Fourteen paddlers explored Spada Lake on June 29, 2019. For most of them, it was a first visit to the  high mountain reservoir  on the Sultan River in eastern Snohomish County. The lake supplies Everett's drinking water. Because it is a protected resource, no power boats are allowed. As usual, we had the big lake practically to ourselves! We launched around 10:30 a.m. and paddled to the east end of the lake, where we parked our kayaks at the spot where a sparkling stream enters the lake. After lunching there, we took in more of the east end of the lake, traveling along the north shore before heading back to the launch site as the afternoon wind picked up. Some folks got off the lake; others continued westward to extend the experience. The weather and company were splendid. Annual Tri Club Picnic

What can I say? Every year for the last umpteen years the kayaking fanatics from Whatcom Association of Kayak Enthusiasts, Hole-in-the-Wall Paddling Club, and our very own North Sound Sea Kayaking Association get together for a little well play time.  We had 28 kayakers go and play in the Ebb current of Deception Passes Canoe Pass. Lots of pictures and lots of fun. There was a group that went out to Bizz Point and another that paddled around Strawberry Island. After the amazing pot luck and the raffle several folks suited back up and went to practice their kayaking skills. Rolls, bracing, edging and other fun stuff.
