Yakima River Paddle

Karl G: “We only had 4 people, but it was a great trip.  The river was very low at about  2000 CFS, but we had no trouble.  We enjoyed full sun in the morning, and full/filtered sun with a breeze in the afternoon, high about 70F.  How was the west side?  Cloudy and 62F?  Saw a nice gopher snake and possible small rattler, deer, and Magpies, Bald Eagles, Osprey.  Sunday we saw big horn sheep from the bike ride.  Wildflowers were not nearly as good as previous years.”
Bill B: “It was a beautiful day on the Yakima River yesterday for four NSSKA paddlers. We saw hundreds of swallows, osprey, magpies, heron, Red-Winged Blackbirds, kingfishers, and many more birds. Deer were eating along the river. The water was low, about 2,000 cfs, and that made for more small rapids and interesting rock dodging than the last time I floated this section in 2013, when the levels were over 7,000 cfs. "It's going to be a very dry summer." Thanks to Karl Guntheroth for leading the trip.”

Five paddlers were met with rain and calm winds for an adventure leaving Washington Park in Anacortes with a plan to take a clockwise route around Burrows and Allen islands.  After a brief safety discussion including an anonymous risk assessment, we headed out promptly at 9 a.m. Departing on the first hour of a flood tide with a moderate exchange, we encountered a small current as we headed east through Burrows Pass. As we crossed the channel, we met no other boat traffic. Coming around the NE corner of Burrows is where you will encounter the most current as water converges into the small channel. This can be a challenging area with a strong current.  We made a brief stop to checkout the campground on the east side of the island then continued on to Allen Island. Spada Lake Adventure

Fourteen paddlers explored Spada Lake on June 29, 2019. For most of them, it was a first visit to the  high mountain reservoir  on the Sultan River in eastern Snohomish County. The lake supplies Everett's drinking water. Because it is a protected resource, no power boats are allowed. As usual, we had the big lake practically to ourselves! We launched around 10:30 a.m. and paddled to the east end of the lake, where we parked our kayaks at the spot where a sparkling stream enters the lake. After lunching there, we took in more of the east end of the lake, traveling along the north shore before heading back to the launch site as the afternoon wind picked up. Some folks got off the lake; others continued westward to extend the experience. The weather and company were splendid. Annual Tri Club Picnic

What can I say? Every year for the last umpteen years the kayaking fanatics from Whatcom Association of Kayak Enthusiasts, Hole-in-the-Wall Paddling Club, and our very own North Sound Sea Kayaking Association get together for a little well play time.  We had 28 kayakers go and play in the Ebb current of Deception Passes Canoe Pass. Lots of pictures and lots of fun. There was a group that went out to Bizz Point and another that paddled around Strawberry Island. After the amazing pot luck and the raffle several folks suited back up and went to practice their kayaking skills. Rolls, bracing, edging and other fun stuff.
