Gray Whales Paddle

Nine paddlers departed Tulalip Marina on April 6, a mix of clouds and sun to begin, but by the end the sun was dominant. Very placid waters, nary a ripple. Nary a whale neither. We paddled to Langley, where they have a nice public beach tucked behind the marina, and a short walk into town for a nice tour of Langley. In fact, if this is a trip that is done again, or whenever Langley is a destination, I would recommend planning on lunch downtown, or at least an ice cream or truffles. Susan, Chris and Harry can attest to the truffles. Paddlers were Don Erickson, Chris Wood, Daryl Donatelli, Harry Marx, Susan Conrad, Werner, Kaz F., Bill Porter and myself. There was some whale watch activity from a few big boats, and they may have spotted a couple just off the beach at Langley, but I never obtained a reliable view of a whale. I think I did, but not enough to bet on. Personally, I like the launch at Tulalip Marina for the scope of day paddles it offers, and probably even overnights. It cost $5 per boat to launch, but gives you lots of Camano Island, Kayak Point, the Stilly delta, Whidbey, and numerous stops contained at all these places. I will be launching from there again, if only to go back to Langley to see if I can find the binoculars I left on the beach. Who needs and excuse to paddle, though?

Five paddlers were met with rain and calm winds for an adventure leaving Washington Park in Anacortes with a plan to take a clockwise route around Burrows and Allen islands.  After a brief safety discussion including an anonymous risk assessment, we headed out promptly at 9 a.m. Departing on the first hour of a flood tide with a moderate exchange, we encountered a small current as we headed east through Burrows Pass. As we crossed the channel, we met no other boat traffic. Coming around the NE corner of Burrows is where you will encounter the most current as water converges into the small channel. This can be a challenging area with a strong current.  We made a brief stop to checkout the campground on the east side of the island then continued on to Allen Island. Spada Lake Adventure

Fourteen paddlers explored Spada Lake on June 29, 2019. For most of them, it was a first visit to the  high mountain reservoir  on the Sultan River in eastern Snohomish County. The lake supplies Everett's drinking water. Because it is a protected resource, no power boats are allowed. As usual, we had the big lake practically to ourselves! We launched around 10:30 a.m. and paddled to the east end of the lake, where we parked our kayaks at the spot where a sparkling stream enters the lake. After lunching there, we took in more of the east end of the lake, traveling along the north shore before heading back to the launch site as the afternoon wind picked up. Some folks got off the lake; others continued westward to extend the experience. The weather and company were splendid. Annual Tri Club Picnic

What can I say? Every year for the last umpteen years the kayaking fanatics from Whatcom Association of Kayak Enthusiasts, Hole-in-the-Wall Paddling Club, and our very own North Sound Sea Kayaking Association get together for a little well play time.  We had 28 kayakers go and play in the Ebb current of Deception Passes Canoe Pass. Lots of pictures and lots of fun. There was a group that went out to Bizz Point and another that paddled around Strawberry Island. After the amazing pot luck and the raffle several folks suited back up and went to practice their kayaking skills. Rolls, bracing, edging and other fun stuff.
