Port Susan Paddle

 Four crazy kayakers braved the winter elements on Port Susan to find 36 degrees F, 10 knot winds out of the South, light drizzle, and 1’ quartering seas on the way out. We paddled out of Cavalero Beach up to Iverson Spit, it was high tide so we tucked into Triangle cove along the way.
We were head into the wind and waves on the way back. For another side trip we went down to the Camano Island Country Club to check out their beach. A kind lady with exquisite taste recognized us as kayakers and had to share a map of the island showing the public access beaches with us. She also mentioned that we were on private property and probably shouldn’t be there. Later Don commented that was the sweetest bum’s rush he’s ever experienced.
With the quartering seas the paddle was slightly more challenging than with calm seas. The bigger challenge was trying to find reason to cheer this year’s Super Bowl.

Five paddlers were met with rain and calm winds for an adventure leaving Washington Park in Anacortes with a plan to take a clockwise route around Burrows and Allen islands.  After a brief safety discussion including an anonymous risk assessment, we headed out promptly at 9 a.m. Departing on the first hour of a flood tide with a moderate exchange, we encountered a small current as we headed east through Burrows Pass. As we crossed the channel, we met no other boat traffic. Coming around the NE corner of Burrows is where you will encounter the most current as water converges into the small channel. This can be a challenging area with a strong current.  We made a brief stop to checkout the campground on the east side of the island then continued on to Allen Island. Spada Lake Adventure

Fourteen paddlers explored Spada Lake on June 29, 2019. For most of them, it was a first visit to the  high mountain reservoir  on the Sultan River in eastern Snohomish County. The lake supplies Everett's drinking water. Because it is a protected resource, no power boats are allowed. As usual, we had the big lake practically to ourselves! We launched around 10:30 a.m. and paddled to the east end of the lake, where we parked our kayaks at the spot where a sparkling stream enters the lake. After lunching there, we took in more of the east end of the lake, traveling along the north shore before heading back to the launch site as the afternoon wind picked up. Some folks got off the lake; others continued westward to extend the experience. The weather and company were splendid. Annual Tri Club Picnic

What can I say? Every year for the last umpteen years the kayaking fanatics from Whatcom Association of Kayak Enthusiasts, Hole-in-the-Wall Paddling Club, and our very own North Sound Sea Kayaking Association get together for a little well play time.  We had 28 kayakers go and play in the Ebb current of Deception Passes Canoe Pass. Lots of pictures and lots of fun. There was a group that went out to Bizz Point and another that paddled around Strawberry Island. After the amazing pot luck and the raffle several folks suited back up and went to practice their kayaking skills. Rolls, bracing, edging and other fun stuff.
